The water can be deep...

We all experienced being technically in deep water. Can we navigate to shore? And what will it cost?

I have a technical background, have been growing in management over the years and for the last 10+ years been a hands-on CTO. I can analyze and design large and complex solutions, explain them to the developers, and also present the results to clients and the C-level.

My experience comes from working as a developer and software designer creating software for mobile network equipment, network routers, distributed systems, and up to high-scale cloud services. Founded two successful startups, and ran multiple teams.

I am a team player with good communication skills and a structured approach to my work. For the last 10+ years, I have worked with several international companies and thrived well in this arena.

Do you need technical help or would you like my advice?

Direction

Having a clearly defined vision and strategy as a company is the perfect situation. Then we have the big lines drawn for us already, and all can pull in the same direction.

It is easy to lose focus of the direction when we are busy with daily tasks

When things are not so clearly defined people tend to keep focus on what is in front of them, focusing on their domain rather than the team or company.

A fresh perspective and a clear direction help teams perform great again.

A defined dot in the horizon is a good start

Until we have our strategy and vision in place, defining a dot on the horizon can help development teams a lot. It provides a beacon for guidance, and often makes the developers make smarter choices.

Not long ago I spoke with a lead developer, in a company needing a defined direction, who said:

We are ready to build anything now, the team has been working great lately, but we just don't know what to build next

Empower the team

I strongly believe in empowering people

I believe in empowering people to solve the problems on their own. It helps them grow and enables them to solve the next complex issue on their own.

The growing big picture

I like to challenge people on their big picture, and step-by-step make their picture larger and larger. This process allows people to grow with the idea and form their mental big picture. Without that, they will struggle to understand the vision and strategy.

Learning requires time

We all know that learning takes time and requires a bit of air and headspace. If the challenges we work with are huge and all capacity is already used, we can not just add more, then we will automate, reduce, and restructure to create needed time and space for learning.

A way forward

Width a clear direction, an empowered team, and a pair of extra hands, that could be your way forward, the way to shore.

My process

With my process boiled down, we have these two steps

  • Understand and plan - Understand the project and the issues, know the people involved, and agree on the goal and the action plan
  • Execute and evaluate - Execute the action plan to reach the goal, while evaluating milestones and reporting back to the stakeholders

Contract and pricing

Before work can begin a contract needs to be agreed on and signed by both parties.

The Statement of Work (SOW) is created to outline the exact action plan, meaning, the deliverables, the timeframe, the working location and also the pricing, and any additional conditions.

Hybrid work model

A combination of on-site introduction and remote work has proven to be a good work model for me, the last decade has proven that.
